New Zealand referee Glen Black hopes a second stint in the British Super League will lead to more Tri-Nations experience and an invitation to officiate in the NRL.
Black, 38, leaves for England next week and has been assured of three Super League games early next month.
"It is to set me up for the Tri-Nations again, so the Australians can't grumble that I haven't done any professional football since the last tournament," Black said.
"I would like to go longer, but I've been promoted at work and it's hard to get time off. They have been very good to me, especially with the Tri-Nations taking up another month."
Black was a controversial figure at last year's Tri-Nations when Australian officials criticised his appointment to two matches between the Kangaroos and Great Britain.
The Christchurch referee earned grudging praise from Kangaroos coach Wayne Bennett, but the Australians still vetoed his appointment for the final, which was controlled by England's Russell Smith.
Although referees have not yet been named for the Tri-Nations in October and November, the fact the New Zealand Rugby League is paying Black's travel costs indicates he will be this country's nominee.
"After last year it's unfinished business for me personally, and for New Zealand league. I'm a lot better for the experience," he said.
Smith has emigrated to Australia and been a regular first-grade ref this season after being guaranteed an extensive trial. But no such pathway was opened for Black.
"With the money they offered there was no way I was going over there to referee in reserve grade and have to be a touch judge for a year.
"They could have said I wasn't up to their standard ... and I shouldn't be doing test matches. I couldn't go under those terms."
He was aware that one vacancy will occur later this year when Queenslander Tim Mander retires after more than 250 first-grade games.
"I think it's because I haven't gone through their system. But if you put consistent performances together at the highest level, surely they have to change their tune," Black said.
