League: Jason Taumalolo set to stick with Tonga

Jason Taumalolo is almost certain to recommit to Tonga.

Michael Maguire's first Kiwis squad, to be named this week, is unlikely to feature the Cowboys lock.

Taumalolo has stayed silent on the topic this year after his sensational last-minute decision to switch to Tonga on the eve of the 2017 World Cup.

Warriors wing David Fusitu'a has already opted for the red jersey again and Maguire expects the other high-profile former Kiwis - Taumalolo, Manu Ma'u, Sio Siua Taukeiaho and Solomone Kata - to do the same.

"As far as I know, they're all going to be aligned with Tonga," Maguire told the Herald on Sunday. "They haven't made any approach there. I've spoken to various people in the background about what they want to do and I understand those guys are going to be sticking with Tonga."

Maguire emphasised he had not spoken directly to Taumalolo, the joint 2017 Dally M Player of the Year recognised as one of the most destructive running forwards in world league.

"At the moment, he hasn't said anything to anyone," said Maguire. "In time, he will want to come out and decide which way he wants to go. I'll let him determine that one."

Maguire confirmed the door is open for the 25-year-old to make a return to the black and white V.

"Definitely ... but at the present moment, I can't see it happening."

Maguire is also braced for the possibility that one or more of the Warriors' Kiwi spine will be unavailable for the Denver expedition.

Shaun Johnson, who returned yesterday against Manly, has missed six NRL games this year due to injury, while Roger Tuivasa-Sheck has been nursing an elbow issue and missed the game in Christchurch due to an ankle complaint. Issac Luke has been carrying knee and shoulder issues.

"There are a number of players I have spoken to Stephen [Kearney] about," said Maguire. "There are players he might not be so keen to make the trip but if they are fit and healthy, I don't think he will get in their way.

"If Shaun, Roger and Issac perform well and are feeling fit, there is no reason they won't allow them but, as I understand from being an experienced coach, it's week by week. If they're available, then I will have them for sure, but I'm also aware a couple might be ruled out."

Whatever the make-up of the squad, Maguire remains justifiably positive, given the depth in New Zealand league.

He intends to name a 19-man squad by Thursday, partly to assist players with their travel plans, as the Kiwis will convene in Sydney on Sunday, June 17, before flying to the United States the following day.

Maguire will also line up standby players, in case of injuries in the NRL round next week.

Given the circumstances, this is a tough first test for Maguire but he is relishing the challenge.

"Of course I'm aware of the situation, that some clubs may not allow certain players to go," he said.

"But every player I have spoken to is keen to represent the jersey. Whatever happens, it's going to be a great experience."
