Graham Lowe: Win would launch Cowboys dynasty

The Johnathan Thurston inspired Cowboys have sent North Queensland into a frenzy. I can only compare their passion to that of the Wigan fans in the north of England.

But Wigan have historically enjoyed tremendous success and their trophy cabinet is the biggest in the game of Rugby League. They are also a much older club than the Cowboys who are the same age as the Warriors.

But the Cowboys success along with their Grand Final opponents the Brisbane Broncos, is a celebration for something much bigger than a massive fan base.

Their success is a celebration for the game of rugby league. Quite simply, they both play the best brand of footy. They both have big, mobile, talented forwards who lay a platform for exciting backs.

There are few clubs in the NRL who have halves who back up their forwards, the Broncos and Cowboys halves do, and this is part of the reason they are both in the Grand Final.

Many in Australia are citing Thurston as the game's greatest player of all time and he certainly does plenty to provoke such distinction, on a consistent basis.

But I think it is too difficult to name the game's best ever.

Players of this current era have a distinct advantage over players from eras before games were regularly covered by television and in fact some of the game's greatest players were only ever seen live.

For example, Roger Bailey playing for Ponsonby, Auckland and the Kiwis during the 60's and 70's was a player as good as anyone in this modern era, but most, particularly in Australia, have never heard of him. Dennis Williams was another local Auckland club and Kiwi player of the 70's who if he played in Australia, would have been a superstar.

But Jonathan Thurston is the player we all like at the moment because he plays like the kids do in the back yard. It's all about draw and pass and it is 'Simply the Best'.

Personally, I think the Broncos speed ball game will catch the Cowboys out but do you know what, this Grand Final is a game that I don't care who wins because they are the two best teams in the NRL.

The Broncos are a juggernaut and everything about them is better than any of the Sydney clubs.

However, a Cowboys' Grand Final win could see a new dynasty begin. In the far north of Queensland in some of the smaller towns there are new Jonathan Thurstons everywhere.

But the Broncos also have a talent pool to dip into that other clubs can only drool over.

But the thing I have always enjoyed about both of these clubs is the manner in which they play the game. They are both great to watch which is more than can be said about some of the NRL clubs who insist on playing no risk, boring one out footy.

I've always believed the biggest risk in footy is to not take one.

This is a practice that has got these two Queensland teams into the 2015 Grand Final.

And don't worry, no matter how much they smile, the NRL head office will hate the fact that this is a Grand Final being played in Sydney by two Queensland clubs.
