NRL: Greg Bird promises to to make amends for bad behaviour

A contrite Greg Bird says he is trying to earn back the Gold Coast captaincy and promises to make amends for his wayward behaviour.

Bird is in the running to lead the Titans next NRL season just 12 months after being stripped of the role for off-field misdemeanours.
The NSW State of Origin star was dumped as co-captain last December after urinating in public while on his honeymoon in Byron Bay.

Bird was also embroiled in the club's cocaine scandal but had his charges thrown out of court in October because of a lack of evidence.

His forgettable 2015 campaign was capped when he was forced to miss the entire State of Origin series for NSW after he was suspended for eight weeks for his fourth dangerous throw charge in 12 months.

The departure of Nate Myles to Manly and a leadership void has seen Bird re-emerge as a viable leadership option for coach Neil Henry next year.

Ryan James and Luke Douglas led the club at various points during last season but neither have the big game experience of Bird.

Bird said it was up to him to earn back the respect of the club's fans, board and his teammates and wanted a second crack at the captaincy.

"It's something I'm trying to earn," Bird said. "It's no secret that the club went through a few dramas last year and I'm real sorry the club, the fans, the players were all put in that situation.

"But we've moving forward now and I'd like to make amends from the front. But I have to earn that position and it's up to Neil and the board to make that choice."
