SYDNEY - Embarrassed Bulldogs NRL star Sonny Bill Williams made a public apology yesterday after being charged with drink driving.
The Bulldogs fined Williams A$5000 ($5520) over the early morning incident.
The 20-year-old failed a roadside test at Anzac Parade, Kensington in Sydney's eastern suburbs, at 3.50am and was taken to Maroubra police station.
He returned a reading of .075 and was charged with a low-range drink driving offence.
Williams attended a press conference at the club yesterday and described it as the lowest moment in his career.
"I would never hop behind the wheel if I thought I was drunk, obviously I had one too many and I'm not using that as an excuse," said Williams, who had been drinking with friends at a Sydney pub.
"What I did was irresponsible. I have let a lot of people down and I've let myself and my family down."
The New Zealand test forward has missed most of the season with injury and admitted he had been dejected by his latest diagnosis.
"This week I did find out I would miss the rest of the year and I would not be going on the Tri-Nations [tour]. But I'm not using that as an excuse," he said.
"It is a bit tough when you're training for five months and you find out your season is finished. But there's no way I'll be using that as an excuse. I am totally disappointed in myself for my actions.
"This is definitely one of the lowest point in my life, especially after trying to get a good image out there and having a strong fan base, especially with the young kids.
"I am going to cop the fine from the club and what the court hands out to me."
Williams is to appear in Waverly Local Court on September 7.
