Hopes are rising that the Suncorp Stadium surface won't be a factor in tonight's State of Origin clash with Brisbane basking in sunshine leading up to the game.

NSW officials admitted they were surprised with how wet and slippery the surface was for Tuesday's final training run, but sunny conditions all day Wednesday are expected to alleviate some of problems.

Australia's rugby union Test against the British and Irish Lions on Saturday night was plagued by players struggling with their footing, including when Kurtley Beale slipped while attempting what would have been a match-winning penalty goal.

NSW assistant coach Trent Barrett today described the surface as worse than that at ANZ Stadium in Sydney, which has long been criticised for its slippery surface.

"It was pretty slippery actually - it was probably worse than Homebush,'' Barrett said,

"We expected it to be a bit damp but not as damp as it was. Whether they've been watering it or not I don't know.

"It won't bother us, it's the same for both sides.''

Barrett said the players understood the magnitude of the task they are facing, as they attempt to become just the fourth NSW side to clinch a series in Brisbane.

"They're pretty relaxed,'' Barrett said.

"They're fully aware of what's at stake and how much we've got to gain from winning tonight. It's been a long time.

"There's a bit more riding on it, the first game was great to get a win.

"But to come up here with an opportunity to win the series, something that we haven't done for a long time, the boys are more excited more than anything.''
