New Kiwis captain Roy Asotasi, who led from the front with a powerful game, says he is happy with his young side's effort.
"It's a new era for the Kiwis and we've got a few young faces. We'll learn a lot from this," he said.
"The whole idea was to breed these guys for the World Cup next year and give them some experience. I'm proud of them.
"We didn't control the ball and gave it up to the opposition and they made us pay."
Kiwis fullback debutant Krisnan Inu was grateful for the opportunity to represent his country.
"The thing I have learned from church is to stay calm and do my best."
Sonny Bill Williams said: "We are a young side and even though we lost, we are building towards the World Cup next year. I am disappointed how the game panned out but we are building something good."
Debutant Sam Rapira, who led the Kiwis' haka before the match, said he could not have been more honoured.
"Test football is another level - a lot faster."
Australian hardman Willie Mason had words of praise for the Kiwis. "They are a great team. New Zealand are awesome.
"They keep breeding them. Our defence was awesome tonight. We want to be known as a ruthless Australian team."
