KEY POINTS:
The Kiwis coaching job looks to be a battle between Auckland's Gary Kemble and Phil Prescott from Canterbury.
The New Zealand Rugby League board held a teleconference last night to discuss recommendations from the leader of its coaching selection panel, Graham Lowe, on who should replace Brian McClennan as coach.
It is believed that after sifting CVs, interview results and advice from fellow coaching selectors Howie Tamati and Frank Endacott, Lowe has put forward three names - Prescott, Paul Bergman from Wellington and Kemble.
Bergman is not in line for the top job but may be appointed an assistant coach, as will the contender who misses out on the main role.
All three have coached on the NZRL "pathway" to representative level. Prescott is the most successful in Bartercard Cup and led the NZ A side to a 48-18 win over Australia A last year.
The NZRL is expected to notify the candidates by tomorrow and settle contracts before an announcement on Friday.
