KEY POINTS:
The New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) today offered Brian McClennan a substantially improved package to keep him as Kiwis coach.
The offer came following a meeting today between NZRL chairman Andrew Chalmers, director of football Graham Lowe and McClennan.
They discussed a formal offer McClennan had received to become head coach of the Leeds Rhinos in the English Super League from December 1.
It was agreed that both the NZRL and the coach had specific contractual obligations to each other.
The NZRL reiterated its position that to remain coach, McClennan must continue to live in New Zealand so he can be part of its high performance and coaching and development programmes. This is specified in his existing contract.
Both sides agreed that in everyone's interest McClennan should decide whether to accept the offer from Leeds as soon as possible.
McClennan said he would consider his position after consulting his family and advisers.
He has until July 31 to make his decision.
The NZRL reiterated its preference to keep McClennan as coach, based in New Zealand, but will support him whichever decision he makes.
A statement from the NZRL said no further comment would be made until McClennan makes his decision.
