The Kiwis are not off to a winning start to their Tri-Nations league defence, but coach Brian McClennan is drawing all the positives he can.
Australia's 30-18 win at Mount Smart Stadium was an exercise in dominance across the field, with the Kiwis' attacking and defensive inaccuracies severely punished.
However, McClennan says the Kiwis' four debutants have given him reason to be happy about the future.
He says the first game is always a very nervous time and he is sure things will only get better in the next match. McClennan noted that UK-based players Shontayne Hape, Motu Tony and Jason Cayless return to the squad this week.
Game two is next Saturday in Melbourne.
