League: Kangaroos not fooled by England loss

Australian rugby league skipper Cameron Smith insists the Kangaroos aren't reading too much into England's shock loss to Italy in a World Cup warm-up match.

England captain Kevin Sinfield says his side is still hurting from the surprise 15-14 defeat on Saturday, a performance which has given the co-hosts an unexpected "siege mentality'' ahead of the tournament opener against Australia on Saturday.

But Smith stressed there would be no chance of complacency when the sides meet at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.

"I guess when we were told about the result we were quite shocked with the scoreline,'' Smith told AAP at the tournament's official launch in Manchester on Monday.

"I think from all reports they tinkered with their team a bit and were giving blokes a run here or there.

"It was more so about preparations for the first match and I think they'll be much better prepared for our game. We know they'll be ready to go.''

Reigning golden boot winner Sinfield described England's loss as a "huge shock'', feeling they'd had an ideal preparation at their pre-tournament training camp in South Africa.

"It hurt and it causes some embarrassment,'' Sinfield said on Monday.

"Whether we wanted to create a siege mentality, I don't think we did at all, but I think we've probably got one now.

"We can bounce back, I believe we will bounce back and we'll do everything possible to fix things up and to get out there and put in a performance that everyone can be proud of.''

Australia will be at full strength for Saturday's match, with coach Tim Sheens declaring Matt Scott (thumb), Nate Myles (ankle) and Luke Lewis (shoulder) available for selection.

Captains and coaches from all of the tournament's 14 teams were in Manchester on Monday, with most predicting some surprise results from the lower-ranked sides littered with NRL talent.
