Rugby league's trans-Tasman rivalry has intensified with a second annual test between the Kiwis and Kangaroos added to the international calendar.
The New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) and its Australian counterpart today announced plans to hold a two-test series to determine ownership of the Bill Kelly Trophy - the only silverware to elude the Kiwis since Stephen Kearney's reign began in 2008.
In recent years the trophy has been up for grabs in the Anzac test but a second match will now be staged after the National Rugby League (NRL) grand final.
Newcastle's Ausgrid Stadium was today unveiled as the venue for an October 16 clash which also serves as a prelude to the Kiwis' defence of their Four Nations title in the UK.
In 2012 the series will be held on a home and away basis with Christchurch scheduled to host the Anzac test they had to forego next week after February's devastating earthquake.
"The matches between New Zealand and Australia in the past few years have been enthralling and there is a real demand from the public on both sides of the Tasman to see more of it," said NZRL chief executive Jim Doyle.
"Rugby league in New Zealand has never been stronger and this will only continue to enhance the development of the game here."
The first leg of this year's series takes will be played at Skilled Park on the Gold Coast.
The Kangaroos hold the Bill Kelly Trophy after edging the Kiwis 12-8 in Melbourne last May.
