KEY POINTS:
The Canterbury Rugby League (CRL) has decided to back the New Zealand Rugby League board.
It has declined an Auckland Rugby League request to convene a meeting at which a vote of no confidence would be moved in the New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL).
The CRL policy committee made the decision at its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday night that "in the best interests of the game" it would back the NZRL board "in the interim", the Press reported today.
"We see no reason to panic over this situation," general manager Duane Fyfe said.
"Any panic would serve to cause destability in the game at a time when we should all be giving it our full support."
He will attend a meeting in Wellington tomorrow, called by NZRL acting chairman Andrew Chalmers to address provincial leagues and other affiliates in the wake of former chairman Selwyn Bennett's resignation last Friday.
Bennett took the blame for the Nathan Fien eligibility fiasco.
"We want some clarifications," Fyfe said.
"For one thing, we are not clear on how Andrew Chalmers became acting chairman when there was a deputy chairman, Peter Douglas, already in place.
"I see Auckland is also asking that question."
Provided his policy committee was satisfied with the answers, Fyfe said, he could see no reason why Canterbury would not support Chalmers and the current administration through to the annual meeting in March.
