Herald on Sunday league writer Michael Burgess answers three burning questions on the Kiwis squad named for the Four Nations tournament.
1 - Who is the biggest omission?
Roger Tuivasa-Sheck by a long stretch. It's a big blow. The Roosters players is one of the best attacking talents in the NRL and was set to be the focus of the Kiwis attack at fullback. Peta Hiku will do a good job and is defensively probably more solid but doesn't have the x-factor on attack.
Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and particularly Ben Matulino are also likely to be missed but the Kiwis have plenty of depth in the front row.
2 - Of the four rookies, who is more likely to make an impact?
Jason Taumalolo. The North Queensland Cowboy has had a sensational NRL season, delivering on the potential he has shown since he made his debut as a 17-year-old. Unlike on previous occasions when he has been brought into the Kiwis camp, this time Taumalolo is certain to start. He's the kind of player that can damage Australia and England on the edges, with his combination of size and footwork.
Dallin Watene-Zelezniak may also become a household name after this series. The Penrith rookie showed no fear of the big occasion in the NRL finals and will push hard for a spot on the flanks.
3 - Is this squad good enough to win the Four Nations?
Yes, particularly as they will play three games at home. For once they may not have the premier pack - England probably takes that title - but the Kiwi forwards will compete well and the squad has a good mix of youth and experience. The injury withdrawals are crucial but Australia has been hit even harder, which may even the contest.
