Former New Zealand rugby league prop Johnny Lomax could lace up his boots again for a local team in the Manawatu club competition this weekend.
Lomax, who was forced to finish his NRL career last year because of a long-term Achilles' tendon injury, made a popular debut last week for the Key West Lions against Whiti Te Ra.
The 15-test Kiwi rang Lions co-coach Darryl Daly this morning and said he could be pencilled in as a starter in their game against the Foxton Rebels tomorrow.
Daly said it was good for his team and a boost for local league to have a player of Lomax's status take the field, even if he didn't make regular trainings.
He said exceptions could be made in cases like this.
"He could back up. He rang five minutes ago to say he could possibly be back this week. It's a possibility," he said.
"If he does turn up, yeah, of course he gets a game. The boys know that. It's good for the game."
Sources have said Lomax was short of peak fitness but keen to help out the Lions and get involved in the local competition.
