King Country will get the first Ranfurly Shield challenge next year.
Taranaki will host the Heartland Championship province in Inglewood on July 27.
The King Country Rugby Union was one of seven unions who formally requested the opportunity to challenge for provincial rugby's greatest prize.
Taranaki Rugby chief executive Mark Robinson says the decision to grant King Country the challenge was driven by a strong shared history and the fact the unions were neighbours.
Taranaki will confirm the rest of its pre-season fixtures this week.
