East Coast got their Heartland Championship hopes back on track with a hard-fought 20-18 win against Buller at Ruatoria today.
The Coast trailed the visitors 13-5 at halftime but second-half tries to assistant coach and first five-eighths Rua Tipoki, his second for the match, and centre Pomare Samupo helped seal the win. A conversion and penalty from fullback John Semple also proved valuable.
Buller coach Craig Scanlon was bitterly disappointed.
"I thought we played enough good rugby to win," Scanlon said. "Maybe we were a bit passive in the first 40 minutes but we played well in the last 40, just made few mistakes."
His counterpart Ngarimu Simpkins, who had a strong game at hooker, was delighted afterwards.
