The Cheetahs are facing a possible code of conduct charge by SANZAR after their involvement in the evacuation of guests at their Melbourne hotel last week.
The Daily Telegraph reported that a Cheetahs player smoking from a hookah shisha pipe set off a smoke detector, forcing 300 grumpy guests from the hotel that the Super 15 side was sharing with the Wellington Phoenix and AFL Brisbane Lions.
After the evacuation, the player threw his pipe into the fire escape to avoid blame. There is no suggestion he was smoking illicit drugs.
Should the Victorian metropolitan fire department seek expenses for the incident - in which four fire trucks were called to the scene - the Cheetahs could be facing a hefty $6000 bill. Unimpressed hotel management has given their report to SANZAR, which has sought an explanation from the Cheetahs.
SANZAR chief executive Greg Peters, who will be in Christchurch for the Cheetahs match against the Crusaders tomorrow, will meet team management before deciding if they are charged for breaching the code of conduct.
