The Thames Valley rugby team will play their first warm-up game this year against a strong Auckland Divisional XV in a Vaughan de Groen charity fixture at Thames tomorrow.
De Groen, captain of the Thames senior C team, suffered severe spinal injuries during a competition match a month ago.
This week, he was moved from South Auckland's Middlemore Hospital to the Otara Spinal Unit to continue his rehabilitation.
A popular member of the Thames Rugby and Sports Club, de Groen is married with a young daughter.
His club has organised several fundraising activities this weekend, including an auction of rugby gear and other memorabilia after tomorrow's game.
