Hawkes Bay single sculler Emma Twigg, competing at her third world junior rowing championships, made a slick start at Brandesburg, Germany, yesterday.
The talented 18-year-old recorded the fastest heat time of 7m 56s.
The Picton double scull combination of Joseph Sullivan and Daniel Karena also won their heat in convincing style, recording the fourth-fastest time overall.
The New Zealand boys' eight surprised by heading off Germany in their heat and posting the fastest time of the day.
The girls' coxless four - Rachel Arbuckle, Liz Jerrat, Rebecca Ryall and Suzannah Nixon - finished fourth in their heat and will have to contest a repechage.
