Duncan Grant picked up New Zealand's first gold medal at the Sydney World Rowing Cup today and 100th medal at World Cup level overall.
The 33-year-old won the men's lightweight single sculls this evening, beating Germany's Jost Schomann-Fink who recently finished ahead of both Grant and Peter Taylor at the New Zealand Rowing Championships. Grant led the German by a few lengths throughout the entire race and finished in a time of 7:04.74.
It was a welcome result for Grant, and adds to his previous tally of three gold, four silver and two bronze medals, and was the 100th medal for New Zealand at World Cup level since Rob Waddell won the first in 1997. The haul is made up of 51 golds, 35 silvers and 14 bronzes.
The New Zealand women's eight moved through to tomorrow's final after they finished third in their last chance race today. The relatively inexperienced crew were last in their heat yesterday but moved through to the final in today's repechage.
Their time of 6:10.67 was only five seconds off the pace from the winners USA.
