Lions coach Clive Woodward has agreed that Jason Robinson can delay his departure to New Zealand to spend more time with his pregnant wife.
Robinson usually takes his wife Amanda and their three children with him when touring but his wife's pregnancy means that she cannot fly to New Zealand. She is due to give birth in August and has recently been feeling unwell. Robinson said she needs his support at this time.
Woodward said Robinson was a world-class player and this delay to early June still gave him plenty of time to show he was worthy of a test place.
He said, "Jason is a strong family man and wants to spend as much time with Amanda as he can. This still gives him time to get out to New Zealand and make a major contribution to the Tour."
Robinson added, "I have played a lot of rugby in recent months and with my wife pregnant, I want to spend this time with her and the children. I think that it is the right for the family, and the right preparation for me to be in the best possible shape when I get to New Zealand in early June."
Robinson is one of three players who will be arriving separately from the rest of the squad. Both Gareth Thomas and Stephen Jones have continuing commitments with their French clubs.
