As well as being an All Black Argus served with the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force in North Africa and Italy during World War II and played in the army's "Kiwis" team after the end of the war, before returning to New Zealand.
During his playing career Argus was a prolific try scorer for the teams and a crowd favourite at games. Following his retirement he coached junior teams for Linwood RFC in Christchurch.
Last week McCaw talked further about the emotional highs and lows of retiring from the game he loved.
Speaking at the New Zealand Rugby Awards in Auckland last night, he said standing on stage one last time as an All Black left him with a lump in his throat.
"But you'd be worried if you didn't have a little bit of emotion giving up something you've done that's been nearly half your life and that you love and are passionate about," he said. "So I guess it's a good thing."
Wearing the All Black blazer for the last time had also hit home a little bit.
"In saying that, it's all very well having a bit of emotion, but it's not as though it's not the right thing. It's just one of those things that you're going to miss like hell. But, you know, that was always going to be the case."
