A major MCG makeover could see parks, pop-up bars and fan zones built over rail lines between Australia's greatest ground and Melbourne Park.
A plan to transform the precinct around the MCG has been presented to the State Government that would see better pedestrian and road access around the ground and an enhanced spectator experience.
A $1 billion first stage of the redevelopment would see new pedestrian pathways built over Brunton Ave and both sides of the railway tracks between the MCG and Melbourne Park.
The new concourses would lead sports fans from the MCG and Australian Open tennis precinct to Richmond station, reducing the bottleneck of fans which forms after major events.
It would enhance fan safety by taking pedestrians off busy Brunton Ave and allow the road to remain open during matches instead of forcing its closure as is now the case.
