KEY POINTS:
Whatsundermykilt won't lack for one weapon in the race of his life on Saturday - confidence.
Because as the countdown to the Interdominion Trotting Final begins trainer Kevin Fairburn is approaching a crazed state of happiness about his chances of downing Aussie superstar A Touch Of Flair.
Fairburn trains both Whatsundermykilt and Glenbogle, who look the only realistic dangers to the Aussie hero who has dominated the series.
After beating Whatsundermykilt in the first round of heats, A Touch Of Flair thrashed Glenbogle in Saturday night's second and final round at Globe Derby Park.
That could see him start as short as $1.60 in the A$200,000 ($225,000) final but Fairburn not only says Whatsundermykilt can beat the favourite but he gives a stunning explanation of why.
"I think we might have too much speed for him," he explains.
"People don't realise how quick this horse is. He looks dopey when you see him in the field but when you pull him out he just takes off.
"If we can get the right sort of run I think he is better than A Touch Of Flair."
That will stun bookmakers and most harness racing fans after A Touch Of Flair's displays of speed trotting during this series but Whatsundermykilt did his best to back up Fairburn's words with a bizarre win on Saturday night.
Whatsundermykilt gave his army of supporters heart palpitations by refusing to surge forward when young driver Shane Walkinshaw asked him to improve at the 1000m mark.
He actually had to pull the whip going out of the straight the last time but even then Whatsundermykilt just dawdled in behind the other horses.
That prompted race caller Jim Jacques to suggest the favourite couldn't win at the 400m mark but it was almost as if Whatsundermykilt heard the doubter and he grabbed the bit, bulldozed his way through the pack and then flew to grab victory right on the line.
"That is just him. He is very lazy among other horses but when he sees a gap he takes off," explained Fairburn. "That is how we can beat A Touch Of Flair next week."
The big three will totally dominate betting on the race and even with the disadvantage of having to start off handicaps on the tight Globe Derby track it is impossible to see anything else winning.
