Zabeel Gelding Six O'Clock News, bidding for a place in the big cups in Melbourne, ran a top race for fifth in the Merial Metric Mile.
Running from the outside barrier in a field of 19, the Paddy and Trent Busuttin-trained 5-year-old was among the last two or three at the home turn. But under veteran jockey Noel Harris, he stormed home under 57.5kg with his trademark big finish.
The second-up run showed he could yet figure in some of Victoria's major races. Six O'Clock News has 50.5kg in the cups and is unlikely to start in the Caulfield Cup without a 1kg handicap.
Busuttin said no horse had got into the Caulfield Cup over the past five years with less than 51.5kg.
As a result so he might have to take the horse to Melbourne earlier than he would like to try for a victory and a re-handicap.
