They will deal with the difficulties that raises next season when that comes around but for now it means the only lead-up race they can find for Australia is competing as an open class horse at Alexandra Park on Friday.
Speeding Spur has been nominated for a 1700m preferential barrier draw race, meaning he could end up alongside in-form established open class trotter One Over Da Moon, if the race gets off the ground at all.
With two northern meetings within 24 hours this week, Alexandra Park struggled for nominations as they often can on dual-meeting winter weeks, with entries for the meeting being held open until 9am today.
Josh Dickie says he and his father John desperately want a race for Speeding Spur, part-owned by All Blacks Andy Ellis and Kieran Read, before heading to Australia.
"To be honest, the race this week isn't ideal for him but it is the only race he is close to being eligible for," says Josh. "So we are hoping it goes ahead because at least it will bring him on a bit for Aussie."
The South Auckland trainers are thrilled with Speeding Spur, who is certain to win his division at the Horse of the Year awards on August 8.
"He is in great shape, without having had a real race since the Jewels," says Josh.
"It is almost hard to believe, but he might be getting better.
"We took him to the workouts at Pukekohe on Saturday and he finished just in behind some handy pacers and jogged a half [800m] in 56 seconds.
"We are excited about Aussie but hoping he gets a race and a decent run this Friday."
The annual winter surge toward the Breeders Crown, which sees some of our best harness racing talent biding their time over the winter, is beginning to intensify.
Two-year-old trotter Conon Bridge was forced to take on the older trotters at Ashburton on Sunday as part of his Breeders Crown prep but duly won, so will be crossing the Tasman soon.
This afternoon, trainers Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen will take four of their team to Menangle, where all are favoured to win their Breeders Crown heats, guaranteeing them a place in the semi finals in August.
The meeting, which will screen on Trackside 2 today, sees Jewels winning filly Dream About Me make her Australian debut, Our Waikiki Beach look to remain unbeaten, Follow The Stars set to start at $1.10 and Classical Art likely to have a winning first outing in Australia.
However, a non-tote Breeders Crown heat at Cambridge on Thursday could provide some more intrigue.
Sensational 3-year-old filly The Orange Agent would usually seem a certainty in a three-filly race but has drawn outside the huge improver on her crop, Start Dreaming in their heat.
Whichever filly is beaten will have to head to Australia earlier than their connections would like to contest a repechage, as only heat winners go straight into the semis.
