Racing editor Michael Guerin tells us how to make money at the Jewels
RACE 1, 12.19PM
4-YEAR-OLD PACING MARES
No doubting the best mare in the race is the drive of Dexter Dunn, Beaudiene Bad Babe (11). Great win over key rivals here last week and she starts behind Indrah, who showed brilliant gate speed last week. If she can follow her through at the start and get handy, she should win. If Amboseli (1) holds the lead that opens the race up for Crystal Star (9) she is worth covering on. Telemecanique, Indrah and Imagine Me and Amboseli all have place chances.
The winner: Beaudiene Bad Babe.
The bet: Get stuck into the favourite and cover on Crystal Star.
RACE TWO, 12.51PM
2-YEAR-OLD TROT
Will come down to manners and the two favourites, Paramount Star (11) and Kylie Ree (3), both have them. Each trialled well last week but Paramount Geegee looks more mature and stronger.
Key to the race could be Latheronwheel (5), who has good gate speed and if he leads can dictate who gets an easy run and who doesn't. Plenty of talent in Cyclone Dream, Springbank Sam, Madisonz Luck and Sapphire Castleton but if the two favourites get it right one of them should win.
The winner: Kylie Ree.
The bet: Couple the two favourites up in quinellas and trifectas, with Latheronwheel for value.
RACE THREE, 1.23PM
2-YEAR-OLD FILLIES PACE
Some of these fillies are starting to look tired so this could be a rare race in which the winner comes from the worst barriers.
Better Cover Lover (13) is a special filly who has shown she can work in races and still win. Awesome trial last Saturday and could get handy earlier then expected as she follows out a fast beginner. Miss Elsie (8) is also a rare talent who beat older pacers under tough conditions at Addington last Thursday. It looks a race in two, with a good support cast headed by the wonderful Collectable (1), but she hardly sparkled at the trials last Saturday.
Anvils Delight (2) could be an early leader so along with Paradise City (6) and Bettor Move It (11) is worth chucking in the trifectas.
The winner: Bettor Cover Lover.
The bet: If Miss Elsie gets out to $5 because of her wide draw she is worth taking an each-way chance on.
RACE FOUR, 1.55PM
3-YEAR-OLD TROT
Two fine young trotters in Miami H (3) and Kahdon (12) but the draw makes the former clearly the one to beat.
He loves this track, has genuine gate speed and will try and lead all the way, which he should do.
Kahdon may be the best trotter in the field but faces a huge ask to come wide. Still, she trialled sensationally last Saturday, beating older pacers, so can win even from the horror draw, with breakers a potential help.
Chocolate Brownie, Emma Hamilton, Vulcan, The Fiery Ginga all have talent but hard to see them beating the favourites, who both look in the zone.
The winner: Miami H.
The bet: Base trifectas around Miami H and Kahdon but include Emma Hamilton and Continental Auto because of the draws.
RACE FIVE, 2.28PM
3-YEAR-OLD FILLIES PACE
Three of the last five races might come down to one thing and one thing only: If De Lovely (1) holds the lead she should win.
Outstanding win in the Oaks last start and has often looked the most naturally talented of this crop.
Pace will be on early but if she holds into the first bend she should be good enough to absorb pressure and still win.
Lancome (2) loves Cambridge and has been good all season so is the logical danger.
Secret Potion (4) was a bit off her game last start and may not be a natural miler while stablemate Meredith Maguire is the blowout horse as she may get to $8 on the tote.
The winner: De Lovely.
The bet: De Lovely but if she gets ridiculously short each-way then on Lancome.
RACE SIX, 3.03PM
4-YEAR-OLD TROT
Only three winning chances and all have bad draws.
Ima Gold Digger (8) looks likely to have the most unimpeded run to the front so is the one to beat after two big wins recently and a good trial last Saturday.
He beat I Can Doosit (10) in that but the latter has been racing with merit in open class. Not a natural miler but only needs luck early and he could bolt in.
Dr Hook (12) has enormous talent but might not be quite so potent left-handed. If he had drawn well on the front line he would have won. He hasn't, so he probably won't. Great Getaway the trifecta maker.
The winner: I Can Doosit.
The bet: If you can get $2.50 on I Can Doosit at any stage take it.
RACE SEVEN, 3.38PM
2-YEAR-OLD MALE PACE
Clash of two occasionally flawed stars in Major Mark (1) and The Muskeg Express (3).
Major Mark will probably win if he can hold the lead but has mixed brilliance with below-par efforts this campaign. Had a hard season but not a fast front line so he may have the raw talent to hold them out from the ace.
The Muskeg Express (3) is a big baby but has a V8 under the hood. If he behaves he can win and has handled this track well in training.
The favoured pair's frailties open a window of opportunity for Thumpem (9), who could trail Major Mark with God Send and Le Sol place chances.
The winner: Major Mark.
The bet: Major Mark could get very short because of the Purdon factor so if The Muskeg Express gets out to $4.50 he is worth the risk.
RACE EIGHT, 4.13PM
4-YEAR-OLD MALE PACE
Tintin In America (9) is a freak facing a nightmare.
His rivals will do him no favours and he might face mission impossible at the halfway stage. Can win but will be way too short. In saying that, if Highview Tommy holds the lead from the ace, Tintin is just about a certainty.
If he doesn't so much will depend on who gets handy without burning too hard but Second Wind (6) appeals as a horse who could end up in the right spot while Sleepy Tripp (12) was fantastic in the Taylor Mile two starts ago and follows out a fast beginner.
Still Coughin beat the Victoria Cup winner last start and also has great gate speed so rates highly.
The winner: If he trails the leader, Tintin In America wins.
The bet: Good race to play percentages, working on Sleepy Tripp, with savers on Second Wind and Still Coughin.
RACE NINE, 4.44PM
3-YEAR-OLD MALE PACE
Russley Rascal (1) is a potential champion and if he leads around the first bend this race is over.
He hasn't been asked to leave the gate fast often but ironically could be aided by a fast front line which means they could all get in each other's way.
Russley Rascal is a great horse with a great trainer and top driver in Blair Orange. Unless he is three back on the inner at the 800m he should win.
Kotare Mach (8) has roaring speed and might go forward early, as a 1:53 miler he could do something special, while Sir Lincoln (11) looked at his best in months last start.
Captain Peacock (12), Hip Hop Anvil (10), Franco Jamar (5) and a heap of others add to a wonderful field and vintage crop.
The winner: Russley Rascal.
The bet: Russley Rascal/Hip Hop Anvil lead-trail quinella and base for trifectas.
