Apprentice jockey Gavin McKeon timed his challenge with Mr Hefner to perfection when they won the $30,000 Evans Classic, the feature event at Paeroa yesterday.
McKeon and Mr Hefner unleashed a blistering sprint in the home stretch to gun down the pace-setting Kenadaad by a nose with a further 2 1/4 lengths back to Mandana (third).
Mr Hefner was fresh from a seven-week break.
The 6-year-old has been a useful performer for Te Awamutu trainer Robert Priscott, scoring six wins and five minor placings from 28 starts.
It was a top performance from Mr Hefner, who was narrowly beaten by Danzaman in the Taumarunui Cup at Te Rapa last start.
The favourite, Floydeboy, settled well off the pace and finished fourth.
