New Zealand trainer John Bary has given strong warning not to ignore The Hombre in today's A$200,000 Ipswich Cup.
Bary has made drastic changes to The Hombre's Queensland accommodation in an attempt to rectify injuries the horse suffered last start when beaten in the Premier's Cup at Doomben.
The Hombre suffered from soreness after running into traffic problems on the home turn in the Premier's Cup.
He was travelling well for Jim Byrne at that stage of the race but the physical damage was done when his momentum was suddenly stopped in a few strides.
"He was very sore for some time after the race but fortunately there were no structural problems," Bary said.
"This week I changed him from the property where he was staying at Nudgee into a stable near Eagle Farm so he wouldn't have to get on and off a float every day to work.
"It's just a little thing but it saved putting him through the effort of climbing up and down the float ramp."
As good as The Hombre is, he hasn't won a race since the Rough Habit Plate in Brisbane in May last year.
Bary's warning is to ignore that statistic.
"If he runs well this time at Ipswich we'll keep him going for the Caloundra Cup in a fortnight."
The Hombre will be ridden by local jockey Jim Byrne, the 54kg being too light for regular New Zealand rider Jonathan Riddell.
