A few seconds of magic on Tuesday suggested Our Sunny Whiz can win at Alexandra Park tonight.
The mare resumes, along with classy Waikato trotters George Castelton and Romper Stomper, in the $12,000 main trot, looking to extend her awesome record at northern harness racing headquarters.
Our Sunny Whiz has won eight of her 10 starts at Alexandra Park, with her only defeats coming in her last race of both her campaigns.
Last season she showed the sort of speed reserved for only the best trotters and trainer Ken Sefonte has no doubts she is ready to display that again tonight. "She is pretty forward and has been very quick in training," he said.
More importantly though Our Sunny Whiz was explosive in a private standing start practice on Tuesday, a major factor in tonight's race.
"She absolutely flew away from her standing starts when I gave her some practice on Tuesday and she will need to do that again on Friday because now she is up in the grades she can't afford to give them a start.
"If she settles a bit behind horses like Romper Stomper and George Castleton I don't think she can beat them but I am confident that won't happen."
Our Sunny Whiz has had only one official workout this campaign in which she outsprinted George Castleton at Alexandra Park two weeks ago.
She has an edge in class over her fellow 5-year-old but he could be fitter tonight after three recent workouts.
Sefonte has more reason than most of his rival trainers to hope for a win tonight, with Our Sunny Whiz needing just two more Alexandra Park victories to earn a $10,000 bonus for horses whose first 10 wins are all on that track.
"They may not be easy wins to come by but I'd love to get them in the next month so we can campaign her at Addington in November if she comes up to her best."
Both will need to be close to their best tonight though as they meet in-form speedster Yummy Lace and last season's Interdominion finalist Romper Stomper.
The latter should be mature enough to win a decent race this season but those wanting to back him would be wise to see how forward he looks in his preliminary.
He does, however, look well placed in tonight's handicaps as an established open class performer off the same mark as horses yet to make their mark in the elite open class ranks.
Yummy Lace has a fitness edge over the backmarkers and with a suitably economical trip she could outsprint most here.
