Sun Ruler will not get the distance he will eventually prefer this preparation when he steps out at Avondale today, but he should go close to winning the Brighter Carpets 1400.
Sun Ruler was stunning winning first-up over 1200m, beating his half-sister and stablemate Sunstrike at Te Rapa in December.
That looked a particularly tough run and his two subsequent efforts lacked the same dash.
On paper it looked as though he might have been racing flat after such a difficult first-up assignment, but trainer Stephen McKee said a leg injury was the key reason why he had to be eased.
"He hit an old knock on a leg and we had to back off him. I was starting to get him ready for stepping up to a middle distance, which he's going to eventually need.
"His work, particularly this last week, has been pretty good and he should sprint pretty well while fresh."
The 1400m should make it easier for Sun Ruler than the 1200m he won first up over.
He faces a particularly competitive line-up.
Tampiko is a long way from being an everyday mare, but she has very good talent when her temperament doesn't let her down.
She had every chance when a well-backed fourth at Tauranga last start, but is capable of turning that form around quickly.
Pocket Diary is not far from another win and the give in the track should suit Keeperinthemyst, who will be improved for her first-up effort.
Laughing Gor looks a good each-way chance in the Vern Trillo 2-year-old, the third race.
