Trainer Mick Price and jockey Craig Newitt were both in tears after stable favourite Pompeii Ruler's dramatic Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick yesterday.
The victory in the Group One, 2000m feature was the injury-plagued 6-year-old's first in more than two years and Newitt dedicated the win to his father Guy who was killed in a car accident in February.
"He was the first person I thought of when I went over the line, this was his favourite horse," Newitt said.
"If it wasn't for injuries this horse would be one of the greatest going around."
Price said Pompeii Ruler would run in the Singapore Gold Cup (2000m) in three weeks.
In a thrilling finish, Pompeii Ruler emerged from the pack to win by a half-length over Sarrera and Metal Bender who dead-heated for second.
The Colin Little-trained Ista Kareem outstayed his rivals to land the A$700,000 Sydney Cup.
Perfectly ridden by Craig Williams, the 8-year-old settled worse than midfield in the 16-horse 3200m feature but finished too strongly along the inside to beat Divine Rebel and New Zealander Mr Tipsy.
Caulfield trainer John Moloney says the magic of champion mare Sunline helped lift Amberino to a memorable victory in the Group Two Emancipation Stakes.
With Damien Oliver aboard she beat Bernicia by a short neck with Reggie a long neck away third. Amberino has been staying in the same stall where New Zealand champion Sunline was based during her many successful trips to Sydney.
"I reckon Sunline's magic's rubbed off on her," Moloney said.
Sun Ruler, the $2 million son of Sunline, broke through for his first win in a 1600m maiden at Avondale on Friday.
