Hot Snitzel still has plenty to learn about racing but displayed enough natural ability to justify his short quote with a convincing debut victory at Rosehill.
Sent out by punters as the warm $1.80 favourite in Saturday's Rosehill Gardens Event Centre Handicap (1100m), Hot Snitzel took up the running and despite racing greenly was able to score comfortably by 2 lengths in his first race start.
Trainer Gerald Ryan praised the youngster's toughness and is planning to start the colt again next Saturday at Randwick in the A$250,000 Inglis Nursery (1000m).
"He's a work in progress but he's going the right way," Ryan said.
"He was a bit of a bugger before he had his first trial but since his trial and the more we go on he's starting to come around.
"He's tough and if he does all right I'll back him up next week and then spell him."
Leading jockey Corey Brown pressed forward to find the front in the five-horse field and gave the inexperienced Hot Snitzel the rail to follow.
Shortly after straightening the Chris Waller-trained Out Of The Shadow (A$5.50) moved up on the outside to join the favourite.
Hot Snitzel was up for the battle and despite wanted to lay in against the fence, he drew away again from Out Of The Shadow.
Golden Feima (A$71) was a further three lengths away in third.
"He had two trials where he had drawn the outside both times and been four and five wide all the way, hanging out and hanging in," Ryan said of the winner.
"I said to Corey to find the fence to give him something to guide him.
"He'll learn and take benefit from it."
Brown knew even before he was legged aboard Hot Snitzel yesterday that he was going to have his work cut out for him.
"He's a hard little ride but I knew he was going to be after watching his first trial and riding him in his second," Brown said.
"He was a lot better today than in his trial but he's still got a long way to go."
Hot Snitzel is the second two-year-old by Snitzel Ryan has produced to win in Sydney this season following two victories by Saramenha.
