Go to the last two horses on the Avondale programme today to look for some punting value.
Bling Bling (No15, R10) and Rosetti Bay (No16) are potentially very smart types who could provide the base to centre a good trifecta around.
Bling Bling has always given the impression time would be her friend. She resumed from a short break at Ellerslie on November 20 and her seventh placing, after being wide on the home bend, was not disappointing.
She is almost certain to be fitter for the experience and Noel Harris, who knows her well, climbs back in the saddle.
Rosetti Bay has had only the two starts, winning at Te Aroha on debut and finishing off nicely at her first intermediate start in the same race that Bling Bling recently went around in.
The No16 barrier draw looks awkward on paper, but should not be a worry with the length of the Avondale back straight for rider Mark Sweeney to find room to slot in.
Jenna Coup (No14, R1) drew wide enough to just be a problem when third on debut on his home track at Pukekohe at his only start. It was an attractive effort and gave the impression that from No3 at the gates this time the Danasinga filly could take a fair amount of beating.
Starliner (No16) might be worth a multiple ticket. She failed at her only juvenile appearance in June, but won a recent Cambridge barrier trial attractively.
Joe's Cook (No7, R2) has had a nice amount of time to freshen after leaving maidens the right way at Rotorua in mid-October. He had to dig deep that day after being caught wide and gave the impression it would not be his last win.
Marea (No11) has had one win in four starts and raced right out of her class when sixth behind Danbird at Ellerslie last time. She is back in her rightful grade and deserves respect.
No one ever said horse racing was meant to be fair, but if there is any justice at all, Royal Entertainer (No 4, R5) will win one soon after a trio of seconds. He has been leading and fighting back strongly and Avondale on most racedays suits that type of horse.
Last time out on this track he led and fought hard against a very smart type in Cog Hill.
On her last effort at Ellerslie a week ago Freestyler (No3, R6) looks very hard to beat in a slightly easier field, but the niggling doubt is that her best recent form appears to be when she has longer between runs. She is still worth a look, but perhaps include in multiple bets. Our Prized Rose (No4) is worth a shout.
Race 7 is the Avondale Guineas, and well, quite frankly you simply would not risk all the rent money on any one runner.
To land the trifecta in one is an impossibility and if you boxed up six runners it would still be possible to miss out completely. Angle around Able Standard (No1), Cedar Manor (No3), Mandela (No6), Sista (No13) and That's Tops (No14).
That's not playing it safe - that's simply the reality of the most open race you can imagine.
Two starts back from a spell should have Hoof'N It (No2, R8) close to his best again. He is smart on his day and against a field that lacks enormous depth he can come right back to form. Escobar (No5) is the danger.
Deebee Jean (No2, R9) ran the race of an improver when finishing powerfully into second behind Fountain Abbey at Dargaville last start.
