Christchurch will host the richest 1600m race in New Zealand next season with the introduction of the $250,000 Coupland Bakeries Stakes.
The race, a handicap, will be run on November 9, the second day of the three-day New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton.
Couplands Bakeries had previously sponsored the Two Thousand Guineas on the second day of the cup meeting but that race has been transferred to the final day when the New Zealand Cup is run.
"This is ideal for us," sponsor Ray Coupland said. "It allows us to imprint our mark on the day and work with the club to retain a special day of racing in Canterbury."
Coupland has signed a 10-year agreement for the race, which is likely to be rated at group three initially.
"We are here for the long haul," he said.
