Racing: Red Ruler may need run

Tomorrow's A$200,000 Liston Stakes at Caulfield looks the perfect race for Red Ruler to resume in.

But his New Zealand trainer John Sargent believes the highly talented stayer needs one race.

Classy stayers have a remarkably good fresh-up record at 1400m, but that is against New Zealand sprinters and not Australia's better class short-course horses.

Red Ruler has not raced since he went amiss finishing eighth behind fine mare Tuesday Joy in the Chipping Norton Stakes in Sydney on March 7 and faces a tough task against a great lineup, including last season's boom 3-year-old Whobegotyou.

The A$2.50 favourite is Typhoon Tracy and you could get A$81 about Red Ruler last night.
