However, he also wants to win or at least advance their campaigns, which is the dilemma Purdon faces with Sky Major and Lancewood Lizzie tonight.
Neither has raced since winning at the Harness Jewels in May and while they looked fit and near race condition when finishing together at the Pukekohe trials last Wednesday, trial fitness and race fitness are two very different factors.
Especially as tonight their two main rivals, Ohoka Punter and Besotted, starred in their comeback race at Alexandra Park so are clearly more advanced.
"That makes it hard this week because while I am happy with my pair, it will be hard to beat a horse like Ohoka Punter," says Purdon.
"I have been through this plenty of times with good horses coming back to the races. Their rivals with race fitness often beat them for that reason alone.
"And these races are not easy to win, with where they settle crucial."
Lancewood Lizzie has the dual advantages of being off the front over the 2200m and she has good form from behind the tapes, whereas Sky Major is new to standing-start racing, having blown his one attempt last season.
Purdon is hopeful bordering on confident Sky Major will develop into a good standing-start horse and says if his two Jewels winners performed at their peaks tonight Sky Major has the more class.
As good as Sky Major is - and he could win a major cup or Miracle Mile - punters would want $4 to be backing him to overcome the issues of the stand and his lack of racing tonight.
The 10m handicap he, Ohoka Punter and Besotted are on tonight is not ideal but probably won't decide the race, with whoever begins better out of Ohoka Punter or Besotted having the option to potentially lead.
