Sydney sprinter Black Piranha finally grabbed a deserved Group One win when he stormed home to claim the A$1 million ($1.28 million) Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm.
Ridden to perfection by 19-year-old Tye Angland, who landed his first success at the elite level, Black Piranha settled worse than midfield as Court Command set a solid tempo in front.
Angland bided his time until the field turned for home and brought the 5-year-old with a beautifully timed run to sweep to the lead inside the final 200m and go on to beat Danleigh and Ortensia.
Black Piranha's last three runs had resulted in Group One placings in the George Ryder Stakes, Doncaster Handicap and Doomben 10,000.
Perth iron horse Scenic Shot defied a massive weight to win the Group Two Brisbane Cup.
Scenic Shot, burdened with 60kg, buried his rivals in the mud when he ploughed his way to a half-length win over Sydney stayer Ready To Lift in the 2400-metre feature.
New Zealander Tinseltown was only a nose away third.
The record books will suggest Scenic Shot produced a modern-day weight carrying record after Tulloch carried 62.5kg in his 1961 Brisbane Cup triumph.
But the Brisbane Cup was then run over 3200m and was a Group One compared to the present-day Brisbane Cup which has been reduced to 2400m and demoted to Group Two.
Big-spending owner Nathan Tinkler claimed another Group One race with a 2-year-old when Linky Dink sprang an upset in the TJ Smith Plate.
Linky Dink was always prominent in the 1600m feature and dashed clear in the straight to win convincingly from Spot On Target with Southport third.
Talented Toowoomba filly Express Air put a frustrating run of outs behind her and set up a tilt at the Winter Stakes when she won the Group Two Queensland Guineas.
Express Air has raced without luck this preparation but put in a few big strides to grab Marveen in the final 100m and record a 1 length victory.
Marveen held on well for second, 1 lengths ahead of third placegetter La Etoile.
