Racing: Our Lukas doubles up for historic cup victory

Trainer Robbie Heathcote was quick to thank his close friend Peter Moody after Our Lukas created history by becoming the first horse to win two Ipswich Cups.

Our Lukas ($3.40 fav), ridden by Stathi Katsidis, held on for a nose win over Frozone ($11) in Saturday's 2150m feature, with Warrior Within ($41) a length away third.

The son of Generous clocked 2:10.6, which was only 0.2 seconds outside Distancia's course record.

"Peter is a close friend of mine and we're two old buddies who've been to Ipswich many times," Heathcote said.

"We bought this horse off Pete when he was a class one horse and Peter jokingly said to me the other day he did a good job pre-training him.

"Peter is well ahead in the premiership in Melbourne now and I'm the same in Brisbane."

Our Lukas, who won last year's Ipswich Cup, was bought as a tried horse for A$65,000 by his owners Barry O'Toole and John Taylor.

Taylor formerly lived in South Africa where he worked for the British and American Tobacco company while O'Toole was a former national league soccer player for Brisbane City and Mooroolbark in Victoria.

O'Toole now works as a barman on Phillip Island in Victoria.

Taylor listened to Our Lukas' victory in last year's Ipswich Cup on the internet in South Africa before deciding to make the trip to Queensland to watch the 6-year-old this year.

"I decided to come over this year to watch the Ipswich Cup and I'm now living at Sanctuary Cove," Taylor said.

"I've lived in Russia and South Africa most of my life and this is the first time I've seen this horse race."

Heathcote played down the historic win from Our Lukas who will now be set for the listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) in two weeks.

"It's a big thrill to win this race two years in a row and it makes up for all the long hours my staff and I put in," said Heathcote.

"I'm like most trainers and I'm up at three every morning and I don't finish until after seven and then sometimes I get to watch the football."

Heathcote said the chance to create history never concerned him before the race."

Trainer Alan Bailey thought Frozone was set for victory before Our Lukas found something in reserve near the finish line. "I thought we were going to get him and in another couple of bounds we'd win."
