Racing: No Theseo so Rawiller free to ride Rangirangdoo

Sydney jockey Nash Rawiller is free to stick with Doncaster Mile winner Rangirangdoo in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on Saturday, after Gai Waterhouse's decision to send Theseo for a spell.

Rawiller won the Doncaster aboard the Chris Waller-trained Rangirangdoo after a tumultuous week during which Waterhouse went to the Supreme Court to try to get her stable jockey on Theseo in the group one feature.

Rawiller was to have been back aboard Theseo had he run in the Queen Elizabeth but after his Doncaster eighth with Darren Beadman aboard, the gelding was not among the nominations on Monday.

"Theseo's fine but it's been decided to spell him," said Waterhouse's racing manager Mark Webbey.

"He's had a long preparation and will be set for the Cox Plate in the spring."

Rangirangdoo is also no certainty to take his place in the Queen Elizabeth.

Waller will monitor the 5-year-old this week before deciding whether to back him up but if he does run the top Sydney trainer has confirmed Rawiller will ride him.

There were 15 entries for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on Monday including Rangirangdoo's stablemates Danleigh and Triple Honour, with the trio also nominated for the All-Aged Stakes (1400m).

Matamata colt Monaco Consul, who showed a glimpse of his best form with a last-start third to Shoot Out in the AJC Australian Derby, is the only 3-year-old in the mix.

Co-trainer Mike Moroney has decided to target the shorter event after originally eyeing the Sydney Cup (3200m).

Monaco Consul will be striving to become the first of his age group to defy the older horses since Intergaze, who beat champion Octagonal in what was his last race in 1997.

Fellow Kiwi raider Vosne Romanee will chase his fourth group one win of the season in the feature, while Doncaster runner-up Road To Rock and BMW winner Littorio have also been entered.

Theseo's absence will leave Waterhouse represented in just one of the four group one races on the final day of the Sydney autumn carnival.

Two-year-old Boto Vermelho will fly the flag for the stable in the Champagne Stakes (1600m) after her fighting second to Golden Millennium in the Keith Mackay Quality (1200m) on Saturday.

"She's done very well post-race, there are no concerns with her," Webbey said.

"She relaxes well and she will be up on the speed and Nash will ride."

Waterhouse and Rawiller will chase their second group one victory together in as many weeks after combining to claim the AJC Australian Oaks with Once Were Wild on Saturday.

AJC Sires' Produce Stakes winner Yosei heads entries for the Champagne Stakes, along with the Paul Messara-trained Beneteau.

The horse has not raced since finishing fifth to Crystal Lily in the Golden Slipper on April 3 and he is the only runner out of the world's richest 2-year-old race nominated for the Champagne.
