On a day when records tumbled at Roxburgh, Quick As A Trick left plenty in the tank while setting his mark for the 3-year-olds on Sunday.
The beautifully gaited 3-year-old looped the field with 1400m to go and driver Matthew Williamson had a second or two to spare when Quick As A Trick crossed the line in 2:40.4 for the 2200m, shaving 0.1 seconds off Supreme Mach's record set last year.
Trainer Bruce Negus, of Waikouaiti, plans to give the son of Lis Mara a fortnight off as he eyes a possible tilt at the Great Northern Derby at Alexandra Park and the New Zealand Derby in May.
"I'm worried we might get to the bottom of him if we keep going," Negus said.
"That's why I want to give him a break now because I want to put a bit of weight on him."
