Top British eventer Oliver Townend was sent to hospital after his horse landed on him in a fall while competing in Kentucky.
Townend, 27, fell as his horse Ashdale Cruise Master slipped at the 20th fence of the Rolex Kentucky cross-country competition.
The Yorkshireman was airlifted from the course to the University of Kentucky Hospital but has since been able to get out of bed.
It capped an unfortunate week for Townend, who endured a 51-hour volcano-affected trek to reach Kentucky.
His journey involved three flights, two trains and three car trips.
Will Connell of the British Equestrian Federation said he was recovering well.
"The good news is he has regained consciousness," he said.
"Knowing Ollie, he could well be back to ride ODT Master Rose in the show jumping tomorrow as he is lying well up there."
The British No 1 is due to defend his Badminton crown, starting on April 30.
