KEY POINTS:
He rode that like George Moore" is the highest compliment any Australian jockey can receive.
Moore, who has died yesterday after a long illness, has long been regarded as the benchmark by which all others are measured. His 119 group one winners is still a record.
Born in the North Queensland town of Mackay in 1923, Moore was champion Brisbane rider before moving to Sydney in the 1940s where he combined with TJ Smith in a partnership that was more successful than any other, highlighted by the deeds of the great Tulloch.
He went on to become Hong Kong champion trainer 11 times. He is immortalised by the George Moore Medal, presented annually to Sydney's top jockey.
