Viewed, the A$50,000 weanling Bart Cummings turned into a A$6 million prizemoney earner, died of a twisted bowel on Saturday.
"Bart and [owner Dato Tan] Chin Nam were very upset," Duncan Ramage, who has been Dato Tan's racing manager for 28 years, told the Sydney Morning Herald.
Viewed gave Cummings his 12th Melbourne Cup and helped to make Dato Chin Nam the most successful owner in the history of the Big One.
Apart from the 2008 Melbourne Cup, Viewed, a 6-year-old stallion, had also been successful in the Brisbane Cup and last year's Caulfield Cup. Viewed was at Think Big Stud at Bowral, and another spring campaign, centred on the cups, had been planned for him.
"We were confident he would do well and decided against retiring him to the stud, although there were a number of inquiries from breeders wanting to send mares to him," Ramage said.
"Viewed promised to continue the Scenic line and surely would have been worthwhile to our racing, being Australian with the potential to produce good middle-distance horses."
As a 5-year-old, Viewed, ridden by Blake Shinn, scored by a nose in a memorable Melbourne Cup finish. Saturday was a day of ups and downs for the team at Randwick. Kudakulari, part-owned by Dato Tan and prepared by Cummings, scored in the Fernhill and looks promising. However, Faint Perfume, also carrying Dato Tan's colours, ended up second in the AJC Oaks.
So You Think, their 3-year-old Cox Plate winner, will be returning "bigger and better" from Think Big Stud.
