James McDonald will be the new No 1 rider for the country's leading stables, Te Akau Racing Stables, from the start of next season.
Te Akau's trainer Mark Walker yesterday confirmed that the stable had signed the current leading New Zealand jockey to a contract from August 1.
Michael Walker and Opie Bosson have been sharing the Te Akau rides.
"Michael is obligated to Peter's [Vela] horses and Opie can't ride the light ones," said Walker.
"We've been looking for a little more consistency and James fits us perfectly.
"James is prepared to ride trackwork for us at Matamata two or three times a week and will
be available for jumpouts and trials."
Walker said Mark Walker and Opie Bosson will continue to ride for the stable.
McDonald has 88 wins for the season, five clear of Sam Spratt.
He suffered a setback yesterday when outed for six riding days after being found guilty of careless riding at Te Aroha on Wednesday.
Stewards charged McDonald after his mount She Rules shifted out in a maiden 1400m race.
He was suspended until April 29.
