KEY POINTS:
SYDNEY - Up-and-coming mare Spinner's Magic signalled better things lay in store when she took her record to three wins from four starts in Saturday's Canon Finance Hcp (1300m) at Randwick.
The John Hawkes-trained four-year-old was coming off a midweek victory at Canterbury but had no trouble handling the rise to Saturday grade.
After settling third for Rodney Quinn, Spinner's Magic ($2.35) took control in the straight and raced clear to post a comfortable 1 1/4 length victory over Junebug ($15) with the well-backed Endearment ($21 into $11) another half-head away.
Quinn said the mare's adaptability would take her a long way.
"She puts herself there and makes her own luck which will win you more races than it will lose you," Quinn said.
"She stepped up a bit today so to do that she's obviously got a bit of ability."
Hawkes' right hand man Peter Snowden was also satisfied with the effort and said Spinner's Magic's record spoke for itself.
"She's lightly raced and that's three from four now, she's a nice filly," Snowden said. "She raced a touch keenly today which she hasn't done before but it was a good effort."
Spinner's Magic won her debut at Canterbury last May with her only defeat coming on a heavy track at Warwick Farm in June.
She is by top New Zealand sire O'Reilly, who was also the sire of Hawkes' former smart filly Rare Insight.
