Graham Bruton can't wait for Lyell Creek to have a crack at the 1700m world record at Cambridge next Friday.
The champion trotter ran a North Island record time for a trotter of 1:56.8 winning the Flying Mile at Cambridge on Wednesday night.
And co-owner Bruton said driver Anthony Butt told him the horse could go much quicker.
"He needs to run a 1:54.6 mile rate for the 1700m to break the world record and though winning is the first priority I think he could have a serious go at it."
The race next week is worth $15,000 but there is also a $25,000 bonus if the winner breaks the record.
Lyell Creek has given Bruton many great moments, but victory at Cambridge was special.
The great trotter was having his first start at Cambridge, the town where Bruton grew up and where he drove pacers and trotters for a while.
Even better was the fact that the race was sponsored by a bar owned by old friends, former jockey Earl Harrison and Annette Whiteman.
