Racing: Left-hand tracks to suit Wall Street

A return to Melbourne could be the spark Wall Street needs to reinvigorate his career following lacklustre autumn and winter campaigns.

The 8-year-old will resume at Caulfield on Saturday in the group two Memsie Stakes (1400m) which has attracted a quality field of 15, including Cox Plate placegetter Rekindled Interest and Caulfield Cup runner-up Green Moon.

Wall Street has gone winless since he won the group one Emirates Stakes in the spring of 2010 but he has run some cracking races in between.

He was fourth in the Toorak Handicap and Cox Plate last year and third in the Blamey Stakes at Flemington in March.

He didn't show the same dash in Sydney, where he was unplaced in two autumn runs, or in Brisbane where he made little impact in either the Hollindale Stakes or Doomben Cup.

Trainer Mike Moroney is starting to wonder whether the gelding reserves his best for the left-handed direction of racing.

"He had poor winter form, there's no doubt about that," Moroney said.

"But it may be that he doesn't fire right-handed.

"I'd be disappointed if he didn't do something on Saturday."

Wall Street has a fair record fresh with a win and two placings from six first-up runs and he has drawn well in gate two.

He is rated a $17 chance for the Memsie with TAB Sportsbet which has West Australian Luckygray favourite at $4.

The Railway Stakes winner was also popular with punters at his Victorian debut in the P B Lawrence Stakes but struggled at his first attempt on a heavy track when fourth to Second Effort.

She's a sublime combination of grace and power - and compelling to watch.

This was only a barrier trial but Sydney's champion mare More Joyous gave another demonstration of her superior class when she cruised home two lengths clear of her rivals at Randwick on Tuesday.

More Joyous, unbeaten in four starts last autumn, including her memorable group one treble in the Queen of the Turf Stakes, Doncaster Mile and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, has won two trials and looks to have come back as well as ever.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse told the Herald Sun: "More Joyous was a walk in the park. Nash [Rawiller] was over the moon."

Owner John Singleton has such confidence in More Joyous he is even considering a Melbourne Cup start, while his racing manager Duncan Grimley said the mighty mare is at the peak of her career.

"She will resume in the Sheraco Stakes [Rosehill, September 15]," Grimley said.

"Then she runs two weeks later in the Golden Pendant, which is a set weights and penalties race for mares. She's going to carry about 58kg which is not too bad."

More Joyous will then have to break her own weight-carrying record to win a second Toorak Handicap at Caulfield on October 13.

"She won the Toorak with 58kg last time and I'd say she will have about 59kg this time," Grimley said.

More Joyous is the $6 favourite for the Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 27.
