Sydney's leading rider Hugh Bowman raised a A$300 salute to a racing legend as he crossed the line first on Verrekeen in the Farewell Ian Craig Handicap at Gosford on Wednesday.
The final race was also Craig's final race call after a career spanning more than 40 years but Bowman's tribute was frowned on by stewards who fined him, a penalty he was more than happy to pay.
Craig chose to end his distinguished career at the NSW Central Coast track where he called his first thoroughbred race in 1966.
Bowman could manage only second on the favourite, Kroner, in the Takeover Target Stakes but had the last race in the bag 100m out and raised his finger to his cap and looked towards the broadcast box as he went past the post.
"It's an honour to ride the last winner Ian will call, he will be sorely missed and was the voice of racing." Since he announced his retirement several weeks ago, Craig has been feted with special presentations at the major tracks.
He said he had many happy memories and much to look forward to and was glad there were no photo finishes to test him on his last day.
"I'll wake up in the morning and think 'gee haven't I been lucky?', it's just been the best ride you could ever imagine.
"Calling races is a stimulating experience. If I could do it all again I really would. It will be nice to be able to go to a race meeting and not have the pressure of calling and to sit down and have a meal and a punt."
As a large crowd gathered beneath the broadcast box to listen for the last time, Craig signed off in familiar fashion.
"Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, God bless, good luck and good health."
